Does Your Car Air Con Need Regassing?
Air conditioning systems lose refrigerant every year — even without a fault. By the time you notice it's not cold, it's usually overdue a regas.
How car air conditioning works
Your car's air conditioning system uses refrigerant gas to cool air before it enters the cabin. The refrigerant circulates through a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator in a closed loop. When the refrigerant level drops, the system can't cool effectively — and eventually the compressor has to work harder, increasing the risk of damage.
Signs your air con needs regassing
- Air isn't as cold as it used to be — the most obvious sign. If you're running the air con on full and it's barely making a difference, the refrigerant level is likely low.
- Air con takes a long time to cool down — it might cool eventually, but much more slowly than before.
- Unusual smells from the vents — not always refrigerant-related, but musty smells can indicate the system isn't functioning properly and bacteria has built up in the evaporator.
- The system cuts out frequently — a low refrigerant level causes the system to trip its low-pressure switch and shut off to protect the compressor.
How often does air con need regassing?
Most manufacturers and industry guidance suggests an air con regas every 2 years. The system isn't perfectly sealed — small amounts of refrigerant permeate through hoses and seals over time. In practice, many cars go 3–4 years between regas services without the driver noticing, because the degradation is gradual.
What's involved in a regas?
A regas involves connecting the system to a specialist machine that evacuates any remaining refrigerant (along with moisture and contaminants), checks for leaks, then recharges the system to the manufacturer's specification. It's a straightforward process that typically takes under an hour.
We also recommend adding UV dye at the time of regas — this makes any future leaks visible under UV light and saves diagnostic time if you have a fault down the line.
