Full Service vs Interim Service — Which Does Your Car Actually Need?
Two services, different prices, confusing names. Here's the straightforward answer so you can book with confidence.
What's the difference?
An interim service covers around 30–35 essential checks: oil change, oil filter, air filter inspection, tyre pressures, brake check, fluid top-ups, and a visual inspection of key components. It's designed to keep your car safe between full services.
A full service covers 60–70 checks — everything in the interim, plus spark plugs, fuel filter, cabin filter, a more thorough brake and suspension inspection, gearbox oil check, and a full report on the car's condition.
When should you have each?
The standard recommendation is a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first), and an interim service every 6 months or 6,000 miles if you drive a lot. If you only do one a year, it should be the full service.
Many drivers in London who cover lower mileages still benefit from an annual interim — because it's time-based as much as mileage-based, and oil degrades over time regardless of distance.
How does London driving change things?
Stop-start driving, short journeys where the engine never fully warms up, and frequent idling in traffic are all harder on your engine than motorway miles. If you drive mostly in and around East London — Bow, Poplar, Mile End — your oil degrades faster than the mileage suggests.
Our honest recommendation for most London drivers: a full service annually, with an interim if you notice anything between — or if you're doing higher mileage on top of the stop-start commuting.
What about manufacturer service schedules?
Some modern cars have a variable service indicator that tells you when a service is due based on driving conditions, oil temperature, and distance. These are worth following — but they're a minimum, not a ceiling. If your car feels different, smells different, or the oil looks black and thick when you check it, don't wait for the light.
