What Happens If You Don't Service Your Car?
Skipping a service looks like a saving. It rarely is. Here's what actually happens — gradually, then suddenly.
The oil problem
Engine oil breaks down over time. As it degrades, it loses its ability to lubricate and protect moving parts. Old oil thickens, deposits build up, and metal surfaces begin to wear against each other instead of gliding smoothly.
The result: increased engine wear, reduced performance, and eventually — engine damage. An engine rebuild or replacement costs thousands. An oil change costs a fraction of that.
Filters clog up
Air filters, oil filters, and fuel filters all have finite lifespans. A blocked air filter starves the engine of oxygen, causing rough running and worse fuel economy. A clogged fuel filter puts stress on the fuel pump. A saturated oil filter bypasses oil around the filter entirely — meaning unfiltered oil circulating through your engine.
Brakes degrade without inspection
Brake pads wear down gradually. A service catches them at the right time — before the pad wears through to the metal backing plate, scoring the disc. A scored disc costs significantly more to replace than just the pads. Worse, brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and loses effectiveness at high temperatures.
Small faults become expensive ones
A service isn't just fluid changes — it's a full inspection. Small things get caught early:
- A corroded brake calliper before it seizes completely.
- A CV boot split before it takes out the CV joint.
- A worn belt tensioner before it destroys the timing belt.
- A marginal tyre before it fails on the road.
Each of these caught early is a small repair. Left to develop, they become emergency repairs at much higher cost — and sometimes a safety risk.
MOT failures and insurance implications
An unserviced car is more likely to develop faults that cause MOT failures — and driving a car that isn't roadworthy can affect your insurance position in the event of a claim. A £150 service is cheap insurance against a £600+ repair bill and a failed MOT.
