How much is an MOT?

The DVSA sets a statutory maximum of £54.85 for a Class 4 MOT, which covers most cars and small vans. That is a cap and not a fixed price, so a garage can charge less but never more. The fee is exempt from VAT.

How long does an MOT take?

Around 45 minutes for most cars. Ring ahead and we will tell you honestly whether you can wait for it that day or whether you are better off leaving it with us.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

You get the failure items in writing with the reason for each one. We quote for the repair before touching anything. If the car stays with us and is retested within ten working days, the retest is free.

Can I drive my car if the MOT has expired?

Only to a pre-booked MOT appointment or to a garage for repairs. Otherwise you risk a fine of up to £1,000 and your insurance will usually be invalid.

When is my MOT due?

A new car needs its first MOT three years after registration, then every year after that. You can check the exact date free on the government MOT history service, or ring us with the registration and we will look it up for you.

Do you do the MOT and service at the same time?

Yes, and it is usually the sensible way to do it. The service picks up things that would otherwise fail the test, so you are not paying twice for the car to come in.
